January 19th - 23rd

This week we had a special kindergarten guest reader!  Miles made a special book at home and wanted to share it with his classmates!  He was so proud to be the author and the illustrator!  Miles inspired other students to create a short story to read to the class as well.  Aubrie was so pleased to get a chance to share her story as well!  It makes my heart full when the students take it upon themselves to show such interest in stories and reading!  I am one proud kindergarten teacher!

This week we expanded on our community unit by discussing different stores and buildings we see in our neighborhood or community.  We made a list of over 20 different places we recognize in our communities.  During our writing workshop time, we wrote what places we like to visit.  We also recognized many community helpers such as doctors, nurses, teachers, crossing guards, police officers, firefighters, and so many more!  The students are really enjoying our unit on community!

This week the students worked very hard with adding two-digit numbers using the Montessori Bank Game!  Many of the students are ready to work on this independently and will eventually begin working in the hundreds!

January 12th - 16th

This week, the kindergarten students started a unit on Community.  We started with a conversation about our school community and some of the HCA workers who do not teach but are helpers in the building.  We made a nice list of helpers, assigned each helper to two students and created questions to ask.  Next, we arranged a special time to meet up with the HCA helper and asked our questions.  A huge thank you to Dr. Kellich, Mrs. Richards, Mr. Ken, Mrs. Ulmer, Mrs. Palmisano, Nurse Judy and Mrs. Popiel for participating in our community questionnaire.  After we shared our research with the class, during our journal writing time in the afternoon, the students chose one HCA helper to write about!  Next, we will begin learning about community helpers in our neighborhood.

"Nurse Judy helps our community by helping the kids when they get sick."

"Mr. Ken helps our community by changing the lightbulbs in the hallways."

"Nurse Judy helps our community by helping someone when they bump their head."

"Mrs. Popiel helps our community by making people feel calm when they are stressed, sad, or mad."

"Nurse Judy helps our community by taking care of kids like when I fell on the concrete."

"Nurse Judy helps our community by helping someone get a band aid if they are bleeding.  Then she gives out lollipops and stickers."

"Dr. Kellich helps our community by keeping our school safe."

"Mr. Ken helps our community by fixing our playground and fixing our slide and the ladder for the red slide."

"Dr. Kellich helps our community by helping the kids and helping the teachers."

Mr. Ken helps our community by fixing something on the roof."

"Mr. Ken helps our community by fixing the lights and fixing things that are broken or fixing the hallways."

"Mrs. Palmisano helps our community by talking to kids about prayer services."

Happy Birthday, Cornelia Connelly!  This week we celebrated our Foundress' birthday!  We gathered as a whole school community and watched a short video all about Cornelia.  Next, we sang Happy Birthday and followed up with a fun buddy activity of making bracelets!
