October 20th - 24th

This week, as we continue our pumpkin unit with Pre-K, we put the students into groups and created Halloween stories.  Each student contributed to the story and to the fantastic illustrations.  It was so great to see how well everyone worked together and how excited we all were to hear the stories!

Using the Montessori movable alphabet, some students chose a Halloween word from the chart and used the word to create a phonetic sentence.  Our sentences are getting us excited for Halloween!

"I saw a werewolf outside my home."

"Frankenstein and bat are friends."

"A skeleton went to my house."

"Halloween is coming."

"I saw lots of decorations."

"I am going to be a zombie for Halloween."

"I saw a vampire."

"I saw a witch riding her broom."

"I saw a zombie."

"I saw a witch fly."

"I saw Frankenstein."

"I saw a zombie."

"I saw a vampire."

"I saw a werewolf."

Pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin applesauce and a pumpkin drink!!!  The restaurant is open!!  The Pre-K and K students had a blast making foods that contained pumpkin.  We were mixing and measuring all the ingredients needed for each treat.  We prepared the food on Thursday and enjoyed the delicious treats on Friday!

October 13th - 17th

Pumpkins, pumpkins, everywhere!!  As we continue to work on our pumpkin unit with our Pre-K friends, this week we worked on measurement.  We partnered up with a PK friend, used our pumpkins that we painted last week, and measured how tall our pumpkins were using unifix cubes.  It was so nice to see how well the partners worked together, helping each other stack the cubes and then counting how many cubes were needed for each pumpkin.

To continue with our pumpkin fun, Miss Nast taught the Pre-K and Kindergarten classes a poem called, Five Little Pumpkins!  Here is the video below!

As a community, we celebrated Founders Day with a beautiful prayer service led by our 6th graders.  During the prayer service each grade was recognized for their act of service.  The Pre-K and Kindergarten classes will be the coordinators for organizing school drives.  We were given a plaque to display in our classroom.  Our first organized drive will be Toys For Tots.  More information will follow as we get closer to the dates when we will start collecting.

After the prayer service, we got together with our 6th grade buddy class and played games.  Play is such an important part of our education.  We learn so much in play, such as sharing, compromising, listening to one another, and the act of using our imaginations.  It's such a joy to see how well our middle school students interact with the early childhood students.  This is what community is all about!
