Last week we talked a lot about Cornelia Connelly, our founder. We explained to the students that Cornelia started the Holy Child Schools a very long time ago. She wanted the children to learn, play, be creative, and kind. We are grateful to Cornelia and her vision of the Holy Child Schools!
The students were put into small groups and given the assignment to create their own version of a Holy Child School. We used blocks of all sizes, magna tiles, and cubes. Each group shared their ideas and worked so nicely together. I could hear comments about where to put the cafeteria and gym and where the door would go. Such a nice way to show collaboration.
This week we started a collaborative unit with our Pre-K friends on pumpkins. We introduced the unit with a story called, From Seed to Pumpkin which teaches us how a pumpkin grows. Next, we visited the Holy Child pumpkin patch which we set up on the lawn outside of the school. The students were so excited to choose their own pumpkin. It was such a fun time for everyone.
As a community, we celebrated Founders Day with a beautiful prayer service led by our 6th graders.
After the prayer service, we got together with our 6th grade buddy class and played games. Play is such an important part of our education. We learn so much in play, such as sharing, compromising, listening to one another, and the act of using our imaginations. It's such a joy to see how well our middle school students interact with the early childhood students. This is what community is all about!
