October 19th - 23rd

In math, the students continue to work hard learning place value using the Montessori materials such as ten sticks and units. Students worked on building two-digit numbers and counting by tens with the ten sticks.

We had a guest reader in the kindergarten class this week!  Dr. Kellich visited the kindergarten class and read a very special story, "The Scarecrow and the Spider."  The story is about a lonely scarecrow who doesn't have any friends.  He meets a small spider and the two of them bond and become friends.  They help each other and come to the realization they are never alone.  God is always with us!  The students loved the story which has become a tradition for Dr. Kellich to share with the kindergarten students year after year.  Thank you, Dr. Kellich!

This week we welcomed three Neumann University students to Holy Child Kindergarten to kick off our five-week study of American Sign Language! One of the students read a story about a little girl who is deaf and how she interacts with friends and lives a normal life by communicating by signing. Throughout the story, our Neumann friends showed us a few different signs such as yes, thank you, love, and friends.  Next, they explained to the class why people use sign language to communicate and what it means to be deaf or hearing impaired.  We are all looking forward to the upcoming weeks when our Neumann friends join us once a week to introduce us to several units on sign language!

This week our Weekly Reader talked about different foods we can make from a pumpkin.  After reading our booklet, we created our own bar graph of our favorite pumpkin foods!  Some of us had a few favorites, including myself!  After completing the graph, we were able to answer questions such as, which food had the most votes, and which food had the least.
