October 13th - 16th

This week in math the students worked on creating two digit numbers and matching the Montessori materials such as ten sticks and units.  We are also working on "greater than, less than" skills.

This week in science we learned about the Water Cycle!  We learned what condensation, precipitation and evaporation means.  We listened to a cool song about the Water Cycle and colored our own pictures!  We demonstrated with a cotton ball and water how a cloud (cotton ball) fills with water droplets and when the water droplets get too heavy, it precipitates!

The kindergarten students continue to work hard using the Movable Alphabet! Some friends are working on creating words and others are working on sentences.  These words and sentences are written phonetically, how the children hears the word.  We then show the children the correct spelling!  Well done, kindergarten!

October 5th - 9th

We started our week with the Blessing of Animals.  Many of us brought in stuffed animals and pictures, and some of us brought in our cats and dogs! Even though the weather was a little rainy, it didn't stop us from celebrating and blessing our pets!  Later that afternoon, Fourth Grade teacher, Mrs. Minner stopped in with her duck, Miracle.  She told us how she cares for Miracle the Duck and told us about all the animals that live at her house!  Mrs. Minner loves animals for sure!

In math, we are working on patterns.  The boys and girls were creating two, three and four cubed patterns. First, we named our pattern, then created the pattern several times.  Challenge your child at home to create patterns with things around the house.  A pattern can be made from many things, colors, objects, numbers, etc.

Each week we introduce a letter from the alphabet.  We work on the sound the letter makes and the correct way to make each letter.  We stress the importance of having good posture when working at the table.  Better posture makes for better handwriting!

When using the movable alphabet, we ask the students to put down the letters they hear in the word.  This is called phonetic spelling.  After they build a word with the movable alphabet, they write the word in their journal and draw a picture to go with the word or sentence they've created.  Afterwards we show the students the correct way to spell the words!

September 28th - October 2nd

The boys and girls continue to work well with routines, rules, and following directions.  We have started working in our small groups with writing sentences with the movable alphabet and building two digit numbers!  This week we learned about the letter S and our words of the week were:  the, see.

When asked the question, "What is science?" the class came up with a fantastic list of things about science!  This week we had our first experiment!  It was called the Milk Rainbow!  We had fun mixing food coloring with milk and using a Q-tip with Palmolive on the end to make the colors move!

Using the Montessori materials, the boys and girls were able to create a two digit number and match the corresponding materials such as ten sticks and units.

Getting ready for the fall season with colorful leaves!
